IMPORTANCE OF GLUTATHIONE

Glutathione is an essential component of your cells.
With low glutathione levels, cells not able to perform many of their functions properly.

Glutathione helps antioxidants and other nutrients perform their jobs well.
Without glutathione, any quantity or nutrition supplements will not do any good to us. In addition, because our immune system depends on this material, this caused us to fall sick easily.

Furthermore, these antioxidants (glutathione) helps the body get rid of toxins.
This is important, because most of us are exposed to hazardous chemicals every day. In fact, a study conducted by Cornell University found that over 60% of the world's population is exposed to air pollution, and the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health recently found that almost 900 chemicals used in cosmetics and skin care products are toxic.

On the shelves of shops selling natural foods (organic) and pharmacies are resplendent with a large array of different antioxidants offered. However, these antioxidants, including vitamin C and vitamin E are "natural" vitamins with other antioxidants, are not natural for your body. If you do not ingest these vitamins, they will not be found in your cells naturally (the body does not produce this vitamin).

Given the importance of antioxidants in hundreds of different disease processes, one question will arise - "What Antioxidants are produced by the body to avoid this desease processes?"

Glutathione is an antioxidant that is most produced in the body. In fact, the presence of this small protein is crucial for any other antioxidants to work.




Glutathione - "FUEL" FOR THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
Our immune system depends on a steady supply of glutathione. Without it, our immune defences become weaker.

Our immune system is constantly wandering around looking for pathogens and foreign antigens causing cellular damage, toxicity and disease.

These antigens include viruses, bacteria, parasites, fungi and also precancerous cells. To neutralize pathogens, our body require an easy availability supply of glutathione. If this is not enough, part of the 'invaders' will be able to penetrate, to infect the body and / or contributing to aging, in the long term with increasing damage - even eventually cause cancer.


We can not avoid illness and aging altogether - although there are scientists who are pursuing some age old dreams - BUT, to maintain a good level of intracellular glutathione we can ensure our immune system in a state of readiness all the time.

Dr. Gustavo Bounous, a leading glutathione expert, agreed that glutathione is fuel for the immune system.

Therefore it is necessary for the proper use of oxygen, muscle strength, and has been found helpful in many circumstances berdefisit energy such as chronic fatigue syndrome, and neurodegenerative conditions, especially Parkinson's disease.

Glutathione - SHORTAGE
Although Glutathione is produced naturally in the body, levels begin to decline at the age of about two decades. From that point, its level decreased by 8% to 12% per decade. At the time a person aged 50, his level is only at 60% to 70% from teenagers.

There is a constant demand by the body for glutathione in our daily lives; stress, pollution and infectious diseases are among the reasons for reduced glutathione.

For those who exercise regularly, glutathione is especially important to improve recovery, to prevent injury, reduce recovery time and maintain a strong immune system.

Since it is almost impossible to avoid these things with our modern lifestyle, most people do not have enough glutathione in the body.





GLUTATHIONE IN PROTECTING THE INTERESTS OF CHRONIC DISEASE
Most diseases clearly shows a lack of glutathione levels.

GLUTATHIONE?
So what exactly is Glutathione?

Glutathione is a very simple molecule that is produced naturally all the time in your body. It is a combination of three simple building blocks of protein or amino acids - cysteine, glycine and glutamine.










Glutathione is the secret to;


  • stay healthy and prevent aging,
  • cancer fighting,
  • heart disease,
  • senile and more,
  • and needed to treat everything from autism to Alzheimer's disease.


It is the mother of all antioxidants, major detoxifier and maestro (regulators) of the immune system.

Who Dr.Kamariah Long?

She is Deputy Director of Bio-process Program, Biotechnology Research Centre,
Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI)


Dr.Kamariah Long's name is synonymous with research on Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) and AVCO is her latest research findings.She was announced as  'Women Inventors of the Year 2006'  by the International Federation Inventors’ Associations (IFIA) in appreciation of her achievements and one of the Top Research Scientist in 2012 by ASM (Academy of Sciences of Malaysia).


She has been honoured and recognised both nationally and internationally for her research creativity and innovativeness. She had won numerous awards in the MARDI Science and Technology Exhibition, I-TEX and International Exhibition of Inventors, New Technique and Products of Geneva, Switzerland. 


In recognition of her contributions, MARDI has awarded Dr. Kamariah Long excellence Service Award in 1997, 2002 and 2006. In 2007, she has been awarded as the ‘Saintis Cemerlang’ award from MARDI.

MYTH : COCONUT OIL IS THICK AND EASILY ABSORB

Traditionally thinking that coconut oil is thick and not easily absorb by the gut and even the skin was proven otherwise in several studies done that will be discussed here.

The studies done relating transcutaneous absorption, intestinal absorption and UV (ultraviolet) absorption of coconut oil to our body.



A study2 on 120 babies were randomly assigned to three oil groups equally divided into;

i) safflower oil
ii) coconut oil and
iii) no oil controls.



5 ml of the designated oil was massaged four times a day for five days under controlled conditions of temperature and feeding. Pre and post oil massage samples of blood were analysed for triglyceride and fatty acid profiles using gas chromatography.


From the study they had concluded that topically applied oil can be absorbed in neonates and is probably available for nutritional purposes. The fatty acid constituents of the oil can influence the changes in the fatty acid profiles of the massaged babies.



A good combination of oil which can work on the facial skin should have a good combination of fatty acid i.e. oleic acid and linoleic acid to reduce possibility of acne development for dry skin people.

The thinning of the ozone layer especially over the tropics worries us which make us try any type of creams or moisturisers in attempt to reduce the harmful effects of the ultraviolet (UV) rays on the skin.



A study carried out to ascertain qualitatively whether the edible oils applied has any protection from the UV insolation4.3


There were eight types of oil used in the study i.e. coconut, groundut, castor, olive, neem-seed, sunflower, sesame and cod liver oil.



The first four showed above 70% of transmission in the UVB region indicatinthat these oils could have reduced UV falling on the skin.


An interesting review from a physician in Florida regarding using an alternative treatment for Helicobacter Pylori infected gut after full consultation and investigations, preferred taking a teaspoonful of extra virgin coconut oil taken three times a day from conventional treatment.5


His patients gave a delighted news to him after a month on this "medication".

It is not a surprising factor since Lauric acid (as a constituent of coconut) able to invades the cell wall and kill it.




Referring to Dr. Mercola5MCFAs (medium chained fatty acid) are smaller than LCFAs (long chained fatty acid), which means they permeate cell membranes easily.

The MFCAs are;

MCFAs are easily digested

MCFAs are sent directly to your liver, where they are immediately converted into energy rather than being stored as fat.

MCFAs in coconut oil can actually help stimulate your body metabolism.


Coconut oil earns even more "points" because it's rich in lauric acid, which converts in your body to monolaurin – a compound also found in breast milk that strengthens immunity. 

Caprylic acid, another coconut fatty acid present in smaller amounts, is another antimicrobial component. 


Using coconut oil as your primary cooking oil is important because it is stable enough to resist heat-induced damage.

MYTH OF COCONUT OIL AND PRODUCTS : 
IS IT BAD FOR DIABETICS?


The newer "heart-friendly" oils like sunflower or safflower oils possess this undesirable PUFA content and there are numerous research data now available to indicate that the sole use or excess intake of these newer vegetable oils are actually detrimental to health and switching to a combination of different types of fats including the traditional cooking fats like ghee, coconut oil and mustard oil would actually reduce the risk of dyslipidaemias, AHD and Type-2 DM.7



A small study  of 40 free-living subjects on the effects of dietary medium-chain triglyceride on weight loss and insulin sensitivity in a group of moderately overweight, free-living type 2 diabetic Chinese subjects reported a pilot study 9 that tests if MCT is beneficial for moderately overweight subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus. 123


Prior studies of medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) suggest that MCT might be a useful tool for body fat mass management in obese nondiabetic humans.4


Collectively, the results suggest a link between moderate consumption of MCT and improved risk factors in moderately overweight humans in a low-cost, free-living setting.5

Epidemiological studies in Indians showed an alarming increase in the prevalence of atherosclerotic heart disease (AHD) and type-2  diabetes mellitus (Type-2 DM) in Indians, both abroad and at home, which attributable to increased dietary fat intake  replacing the traditional cooking fats condemned to be atherogenic, with refined vegetable oils promoted as "heart-friendly" because of their polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content, unfortunately, has not been able to curtail this trend. 

Current data on dietary fats indicate that it is not just the presence of PUFA but the type of PUFA that is important i.e a high PUFA n-6 (omega 6) content and high n-6/n-3 omega 6/omega 3) ratio in dietary fats being atherogenic and diabetogenic or even increase risk of cancer.6

The subjects were randomized into 2 test groups, with one given MCT and the other corn oil as control for long- triglycerides (LCTs).






The MCT group showed an across-time reduction in body weight and WC (waist circumference), an increase in serum C-peptide7 concentration, a reduction in homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance, and a decrease in serum cholesterol concentration.


A between-group comparison also shows reduced body weight, WC, and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance in the MCT group compared with the LCT group at the end of the study.

Few studies done using coconut water in relation with diabetes gave positive results for future usage of this natural entity in aiding this modern ailment.8
